Overview

Skoda is off to a great new start in Australia after having been absent from this market from late 1969 to October 2007. I was among many colleagues in predicting a difficult road to drive. Look at Renault, I said. But the marketing people who reckoned Australians would buy Skodas were right. Clearly, the association with Volkswagen and Audi helps. So does keen pricing. Almost needless to say, the product is excellent and boasts some clever engineering. Skoda enjoys a long and proud history. Its tough, well-engineered vehicles have made a name for themselves in motorsport. While Skoda products sit below their Volkswagen counterparts (which, in turn, sit below comparable Audis), there is little evidence that these cars from the Czech Republic give anything away in design, engineering or quality. The latest model to arrive is the versatile little Yeti wagon available in diesel and petrol variants and with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. I tested an entry level Yeti 77TS equipped with the optional 7-speed DSG transmission. This lifted the price from $26,290 to $28,590. For anyone who hasn’t learnt about DSG, it’s an acronym coined by the Volkswagen Audi Group, who was a pioneer in the field. This is a dual-clutch manual gearbox which behaves like an automatic transmission, having no clutch pedal and conducting its own gearshifts unless the driver chooses to shift manually. Like all Skodas, the Yeti offers excellent value.

Accommodation

Here is where the real cleverness emerges. Yes, of course the Yeti can accommodate up to five people with good space for rear passengers who enjoy deep footwells. But you can perform minor miracles with these three rear seats, each of which is fully removable. You can angle the backrests individually through a range of 13.5 degrees. The outer seats can be slid fore and aft. Take out the middle seat and the outer seats can be slid no less than 80 mm towards the centre of the car to create. If you fold the backrest forward, the whole seat can be tilted forwards to give access to the simple levers that allow removal. The seats are not heavy. an extremely spacious four-seater wagon. Despite the Yeti’s compactness, there is a large amount of storage space even with all three rear seats in place. Sixteen-inch alloy wheels are standard and you get a full-size steel spare wheel. Some might wish for a greater towing capacity because the front-wheel drive 77TSI’s maximum is 1200 kilograms, while the four-wheel drive versions can haul up to 1600 kilograms.

Performance & Economy

This is the same 77 kW 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that powers the Fabia light car but its generous torque of 175 Nm is available right through from just 1550 rpm to 4100. While the power figure seems low in absolute terms, the turbocharging gives access to more than enough torque to compensate. Performance is quite strong, although not in the same league as the 103TDI. The official overall economy rating is 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres.

Ride & Handling

The Yeti, despite its boxy body and low price, is a real driver’s car. It has excellent steering feel and response. The elevated ride height does not hamper the Yeti’s eagerness to hustle through corners. Ride comfort is excellent and body roll is well contained. Unlike so many vehicle in this sector, you will jump in it and go for a drive to nowhere in particular just because it is so much fun to be behind the wheel. That’s the main reason for the high star rating.

Conclusion

The 77TSI is so good that we wish you could specify it with all-wheel drive.
